OpenAI introduced Data agent in ChatGPT Work on September 10. The company says the tool connects approved company data to conversational analysis and editable dashboards. For a brand or agency assessing a campaign, our first test would be whether the answer uses the same definition of success as the people signing off the work.
Consider a hypothetical fashion label comparing two campaigns. One sends shoppers to a product page; the other promotes a collection through a creator. A request to identify the better performer leaves several choices unstated. Does a sale mean an order placed or an order kept after returns? Does the comparison include the creator's fee? Is the team assessing the opening weekend or the following month? A clear chart can conceal those choices as well as a spreadsheet can.
Define the comparison before asking for it
OpenAI says Data agent uses an organization's business definitions and data relationships, including those held in semantic layers. Administrators select the available connections and roles; queries follow the connected account's permissions. These are vendor descriptions, not findings from a test by The Human Input.
A useful pilot would start with one question the team has already answered. Give the agent the agreed reporting period and the definition of net sales, then compare its result with the signed-off report. Ask for the evidence behind the difference before accepting a new conclusion. A discrepancy might reveal an error in either calculation, an incomplete source or a definition nobody had written down.
The creative interpretation needs its own discussion. A campaign might attract attention to an unfamiliar designer while generating fewer immediate purchases. A team should name that objective before judging the work through a sales measure. Changing the reporting interface does not settle a disagreement about what the campaign was meant to achieve.
Keep the first experiment inside the team
For an agency, we would keep the first comparison within one client account and retain a read-only reporting task until the team can trace the result. Check the audience of any shared dashboard before circulation. Access to a source and permission to distribute a client-facing conclusion are separate decisions.
The pilot should end with a short record of the question, the calculation and the person who accepted it. That gives the next analyst something to reproduce when a campaign changes or a colleague asks why a number differs. The test of this release is a report a team can explain without asking the assistant to speak for it.
