Blender

Blender is a free, open-source 3D creation suite covering modelling, sculpting, animation, simulation and rendering. It includes compositing and video-editing tools, so an artist can assemble and finish substantial parts of a visual project in one application. For fashion work, it can provide a space for product visualisation, set building and campaign animation around supplied or newly modelled assets. Those are production uses, not evidence that a garment pattern or simulation transfers intact from another tool. A studio still needs a delivery specification: the model and textures to retain, the renderer to use and the files the next collaborator can open.

What to check

  • Record the project release and test existing scenes before upgrading. Blender 5.2 LTS has a published support period through July 2028.
  • Agree the rendering setup before approving surfaces; a rendered garment is not a physical-fit test.
  • Check geometry, texture paths and animation with the receiving artist, and retain the editable source.

History and changes

  1. Blender 5.2 LTS

The initial 5.2 LTS release preceded the 5.2.1 patch dated 25 August 2026.

  2. GPL release

Blender was released under the GNU General Public License after the Free Blender fundraising campaign.

  3. First Blender source files

Ton Roosendaal wrote the first source files named Blender; the official history treats this as its birthday.
